This 1932 Olds Super trumpet is arguably the finest-playing of all vintage horns. The very earliest of Supers, like this one, were more special than later models. For one thing, they are very noticeably lighter and the valves are like greased lightning. The sound is laser-like and pure and intonation and response are uncanny. You can read about the legendary Olds trumpets in many fine posts here in the TH archives. The Super Recording was so fine and rare that some refer to it as the "unicorn" of trumpets. These horns are now fetching upwards of $4,000 when you can find one. I've owned three of them, and they all played as advertised. I like this Olds Super better. The same craftsmen that poured all that genius into the Olds Super Recording built these very early Supers as well, and some--no, a lot--of the same magic went into the Supers. This Super is one of two that I was lucky enough to find. The lead trumpet player of one of the military jazz bands in Washington D.C. shares my enthusiasm for these old Supers. He borrowed my two horns and tried them for several weeks before deciding on the other one. He now plays it in the band. He reluctantly sent this one back to me, but not before having a master horn tech in D.C. tweak it to perfection. The horn is in perfect, original playing condition. It has no major dents or dings, modifications or signs of trauma. Cosmetically, it isn't pretty, but being one of the easiest, best-playing horns available anywhere goes a long way in making you forget that. The price has been cut to $1,100. You can go to the Horn Trader's You Tube channel to see me describing the horn and putting it through its paces.
