The Olds serial records put #550,000 at June 1966 and #600,000 at June 1967, making #597123 essentially a mid-1967 instrument.

The L-12 is an interesting vintage flugelhorn. It was based on the Couesnon concept but built substantially by Olds, with the Re-O-Loy bell giving it the characteristic dark, broad flugelhorn sound. Contemporary players generally regard the L-12 as a very good vintage flugel, although valve noise and individual intonation characteristics can vary.

What Does 25H / 239 CL Mean?

These designations identify important parts of the trumpet’s configuration.

The 239 bell

The 239 bell is associated with Bach’s C trumpet lineup. Bell design influences the instrument’s response, projection, tonal center, and overall playing characteristics.

The 25H leadpipe

The 25H is the mouthpipe designation. It is a key part of the trumpet’s playing characteristics, influencing resistance, response, and intonation.

The CL designation

The CL designation is consistent with a C trumpet in large bore. It should not be confused with the more familiar ML designation on many Bach Bb trumpets.

How Does It Perform?

The 239/25H combination is worth considering for several applications.

This horn is famous for it’s Tone control Band around the rim of the bell.  All of the outside slides are made of a hard drawn special nickel silver alloy.

All points of wear are also nickle silver making this horn incredibly durable.  This horn has an incredible tone.  With smooth valve action and good compression in the slides. This horn is in just moderate shape, but with a beautiful tone.  The horn has been overhauled in its lifetime, but I can’t tell you who did the work. There is a very small patch right where the bell and the 3rd valve meet on the back side out of view.  It doesn’t affect the playing but I noticed it.

It is a well maintained horn from the 1970’s. It could pass for a brand new horn. The lacquer on the bell is a very good , hardly any wear. The valves are some of the best I have ever felt, and they are a bit unusual since they have bottom springs that go between the bottom of the valve piston and the bottom valve caps. The herald bell detaches and has its own slot in the case. The case is in excellent shape and has room for the bell, body of the horn, and a mouthpiece. The horn takes a cornet shank mouthpiece. Comes with case, no mouthpiece included though I do have a few I could sell along with the horn.  You hardy ever see these up for sale, they are quite unusual. This would be a great horn for a collector or somebody looking for a good entry level piccolo.  Comes with the Original Case.
