These instruments were handmade by Dick Akright at Best Music in Oakland, California. Production was extremely limited because of high manufacturing costs and Severinsen’s requirement that he personally play-test every horn before it was released for sale. Production eventually ceased due to these high costs, making existing models highly sought after on the used market,

Serial Number Decoding
Bel Canto trumpets typically use a date-encoded serial number system where the digits indicate the month and year of completion.
  • 05: Represents the month of May.
  • 88: Represents the year 1988.
Production Context
Instruments from this era were handmade by Dick Akright in Oakland, California, in direct collaboration with Doc Severinsen. Because “Doc” insisted on play-testing every horn before it could be sold, production was extremely slow and limited. Horns manufactured in 1988 fall into the “prime” production period of the Severinsen-Akright partnership, during which they aimed to meticulously recreate the sound and response of 1930s New York Bach Stradivarius trumpets.
