Description

F.E. Olds Recording trumpet Sn/ 405868 was manufactured around 1960–1961 in Fullerton, California. This era represents the “golden age” of Olds production, where instruments were known for high-quality craftsmanship, featuring distinctive design elements.  This professional-grade model is defined by its “balanced” wrap and specific alloy composition designed for studio recording. This instrument has seen heavy use, But there is still life in this horn and music to be made.

Key Features of this Model
  • Design: Known for its “offset” middle valve casing and ornate bell engraving.
  • Materials: Frequently features a “Rey-O-Loy” bell (rose brass/high copper content)
  • Third Valve Trigger: Equipped with a spring-loaded third-valve slide trigger for intonation adjustment.
  • Leadpipe: Often made with matching Rey-O-Loy material for better resonance.
  • Bore Size: .460 inches (Medium-Large). This was the standard bore for the Recording model, offering a balance of resistance and projection.
  • Bell Diameter: Approximately 4 11/16 to 4 3/4 inches.
  • Overall Length: Approximately 19 7/8 inches (total) or 18 3/4 inches from bell rim to the edge of the curve.
  • Weight: Estimated between 37.5 to 38.3 ounces (approx. 2.4 lbs), which was standard for Olds horns of this era.
The Recording model is famous for its use of three distinct metals to achieve a specific tonal color and durability: [1, 2]
  • Rey-O-Loy (Rose Brass): Used for the bell and leadpipe. This high-copper alloy provides a warmer, richer tone and is naturally resistant to “red rot” (corrosion).
  • Yellow Brass: Used for the valve section and tuning slide crooks to ensure structural sturdiness.
  • Nickel Silver: Used for the balusters, outer slide tubes, and trim to eliminate corrosion at contact points and add brilliance to the sound.
