Richard DW Smith “C” Trumpet S/n 0043 London
This instrument is a rare, professional-grade “C” trumpet custom-built by Dr. Richard Smith under his original company label, Richard Smith Musical Instruments Ltd., when it was based at 110 The Vale in London, UK. With the incredibly low serial number 0043, this is an early production model made before he co-founded the world-famous Smith-Watkins brand in 1985
  • Maker: Dr. Richard Smith (former chief designer for Boosey & Hawkes / Besson).
  • Location of Manufacture: London, England (prior to his 2005 move to North Yorkshire).
  • Key: “C” Trumpet (primarily used in orchestral and classical music settings).
  • Serial Number: 0043 (indicates one of his earliest solo-built custom instruments).
The Story Behind the Maker
Before his designs were used by the British Military and at Royal Weddings, Dr. Richard Smith started his own boutique workshop in London. He holds a PhD in brass acoustics and is widely considered an industry “Stradivari” for his scientific precision in trumpet bore design. Early instruments with double- or triple-digit serial numbers from his original London shop are highly sought after by collectors and professional orchestral players due to their handcrafted heritage and exceptional acoustic performance.
