Instrument History & Model Overview
The Schilke P4 is the 3-valve predecessor and cousin to the legendary, industry-standard Schilke P5-4 Piccolo Trumpet. [1]
  • The Serial Number (47153): Places the manufacturing date of this horn precisely around 1999–2000. This era is highly sought after by brass enthusiasts because it represents a period of incredible build consistency at the Chicago factory.
  • Design DNA: It features a .450-inch medium bore paired with Schilke’s hallmark #8 taper bell. P4s are structurally famous for their unique, enlarged knuckles connecting the valve casing to the slides, providing an intensely free-blowing experience compared to classic French-style tight-wrap piccolos.

3 Valves and the money shot straight through the tubes! It has three valves and a medium bore (0.450 inch) that is significantly larger than the small bore (around 0.415) piccolos made in the French tradition which previously dominated the market. It also has expanded valve bows and large bore piston ports. 3RD slide finger ring These differences are immediately apparent and make the horn far more free blowing than any previous manufactured piccolos. It has a scale and playability far better than than the smaller instruments. Since at least 1979 or so all P4s have come with beryllium bells standard. Usual flawless Schilke craftsmanship and attention to detail. Intonation is very good with probably the best valve action on the planet. The P4 is similar in bore and bell to the P5-4, except it has only three valves. The P4 is listed in the company’s current price list, but is not included in the catalog. Rare and hard to find! Excellent design and constrution, very smooth valve action, intonation is exceptional through the full range of the instrument, nice full tone with good center. It projects very well, and a great deal of fun to play.

  • “Melk Ultra Clean and Alignment”: This instrument has been professionally serviced by Charlie Melk, one of the most widely respected brass restoration and customization experts in the United States. A Melk precision valve alignment adjusts the internal ports to an absolute microscopic tolerance, giving the player much cleaner slotting, faster note transitions, and a more uniform tone throughout the partials. [1]
  • “100% Immaculate Compression”: Piccolo trumpets are notoriously unforgiving if there is any air leakage in the pistons. Because the tubing is so short, poor compression instantly ruins the high register and destabilizes the pitch. Flawless, tight compression on a 25-year-old horn indicates pristine Monel pistons that have been oiled diligently and show zero structural wear.
  • Three-Valve vs. Four-Valve Market Dynamics: Because it lacks the fourth valve for low-register compensating pull extensions, orchestral players often pass on the P4 in favor of a P5-4. However, commercial players, high-note specialists, and soloists who prefer a significantly lighter weight casing, faster handling, and an incredibly free-blowing upper register actively seek out pristine P4s.
