Description

Getzen Eterna Mdl 895 Flugelhorn

The Getzen Eterna Model 895 is a professional-grade B♭ flugelhorn celebrated for its rich, dark, and mellow tone. Originally introduced in the 1960s and made in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, this legendary instrument is highly favored by jazz, concert, and brass band musicians. It holds a notable place in jazz history as the specific model famously played by jazz icon Freddie Hubbard.

According to official documentation from Getzen and major instrument retailers, the Eterna 895 features a unique design optimized for tone and transition flexibility: [1, 2]
  • Bore Size: .460 inches. This relatively large bore allows a seamless transition for players switching back and forth from a standard B♭ trumpet.
  • Bell: 6.5-inch yellow brass bell. It is often paired with a square back bell crook design that optimizes response and projection.
  • Valves: 3 Perinet pistons utilizing Getzen’s industry-renowned, ultra-smooth hand-lapped valve design.
  • Slides: Hand-lapped nickel silver first and third valve slides.
  • Intonation Aids: Equipped with a functional third-slide trigger to easily adjust pitch on lower notes.
  • Mouthpipe: Nickel-plated brass with a Standard American Shank Receiver.
  • Finishes: Clear lacquer (Model 895-T)
  • Accessories: COMES WITH A REUNION BLUES LEATHER GIGBAG AND A Marcinkiewicz #5 mouthpiece
Player Performance & Sonic Character
  • Mellow Projection: True to the traditional flugelhorn profile, the 895 delivers a deep, fluid, smoky sound ideal for jazz combos, small ensemble chamber work, and lyrical soloing.
  • Mouthpiece Versatility: Community reviews note the horn is highly responsive to mouthpiece changes. It can easily be brightened up using a shallow bowl mouthpiece or darkened significantly further with a deep V-cup design.
  • Exceptional Valves: Like most Eterna-series instruments from Getzen, the primary highlight praised by real-world players is the lightning-fast, lifetime-durable valve action.

  • Pre-Owned & Vintage: Excellent-quality older models from the 1970s and 1980s (the Freddie Hubbard era)  They are highly sought after by collectors for their historical build quality.
Manufacturing Dates
The Eterna series flugelhorns have been manufactured in Elkhorn, Wisconsin since the 1960s. Because production spans several decades, you must check the serial number stamped on the casing of the second valve to find the exact year your horn was built. [1, 2, 3]
You can cross-reference your serial number using Getzen’s Official Dating Guide or established historical brass registries: [1, 2]
  • K-Prefix (1964–1979): Standard vintage models. For example, K12101 through K31120 were built between 1968 and 1971.
