is a highly regarded vintage instrument from the mid-20th century, known for its high build quality, warm tone, and excellent response. F.E. Olds & Son no longer manufactures these specific vintage models, so they are primarily available from vintage instrument retailers and online marketplaces.
- Tone and Response: It offers a rich, sonorous tone that some describe as leaning towards the darker side, though it can still be brilliant when pushed. Reviewers on Olds-Central.com praise its “thick and dense as iron” tone and solid performance across all registers.
- Design: Key features include a .460″ medium-large bore, a brass tone ring on the bell for “tone control”, and an adjustable saddle on the first slide for intonation adjustment.
- Valves: The cornet utilizes a trumpet-style valve block with nickel-plated valves that are known for being smooth and quick, a feature that contributed to the brand’s reputation for professional quality.
- Intonation: It plays very in-tune, particularly in the upper register, making it a reliable instrument for performers.
