Description

Selmer 23 S/n 8275

This horn appears to be in Gold Plate.  If not the lacquer and sharp engraving is gorgeous.

The Selmer 23 Trumpet

is a vintage, professional-level B-flat trumpet model from Henri Selmer Paris, highly regarded for its distinctive design and warm, rich sound. It was famously played by jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Harry James.
Key Features and Specifications
  • Design: The Selmer 23 is a “Grand Prix” model, known for its art-deco inspired ferrules, distinctive “S” engraved water keys, and “C”-shaped pinky hook. The Model 23A and 24A are “Balanced Action” models, featuring a forward-set valve casing to distribute weight more evenly in the player’s hands, improving ergonomics.
  • Bore Size: The Model 23 typically has a medium bore of approximately .456 inches, which was a common choice for French soloists of its era. The 23A model has a slightly larger, medium-large bore of around .458″ to .459″.
  • Materials: The trumpet uses nickel silver for the lead pipe and inner slides, which helps prevent corrosion issues like red rot, while the rest of the body is brass.
  • Sound: Reviewers consistently praise the Model 23 for its warm, vibrant, and rich tone with excellent projection, offering a sound that is distinct from modern trumpets.
  • Versatility: Many instruments were designed to be played in both B-flat and A keys, with an adjustable main tuning slide to facilitate this.
